On-farm biosecurity is defined as a set a strategies which aim at preventing pathogens from entering, leaving, circulating or persisting within premises.

As a consequence, biosecurity involves two major concepts:

  • the compartimentation into different zones, with different sanitary status
  • the reduction of the infectious “pressure”, by means of cleaning and disinfection procedures.

To that end, biosecurity should include farm site conception, as well as daily routines and the means to control them.
Biosecurity may also be considered at different scales than farm scale : some approaches focus on groups of farms, whole regions, or even continents.

Some videos, focusing on various aspects of biosecurity, are available in French, on the French version of this page.
They include the use of anterooms, and the flow of vehicules between the barn and the surrounding of the barn.
